Yann André LeCun (born July 8, 1960) is a French-American computer scientist renowned for his pioneering work in the fields of machine learning, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. He currently serves as the Silver Professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University and is the Vice President and Chief AI Scientist at Meta. His work is particularly celebrated for the development of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), which have found extensive applications in areas such as image recognition.

Early Life and Education

LeCun was born in Soisy-sous-Montmorency, a suburb of Paris, France. His father, an engineer, influenced his interest in electronics and mechanics. In 1983, he obtained a diploma in electrical engineering from ESIEE Paris, followed by a DEA in artificial intelligence and pattern recognition in 1984, and a Ph.D. in computer science in 1987 from the Pierre and Marie Curie University (now Sorbonne University) in Paris. His doctoral thesis was titled "Modeles connexionnistes de l'apprentissage" (Connectionist Learning Models).

As a teenager, he enjoyed playing in a band while maintaining a fervent passion for science and engineering. He attributes his long-standing interest in machine intelligence to the murderous computer HAL from the film "2001: A Space Odyssey," which sparked his fascination with AI (ACM Turing Award).

Career and Research

LeCun's career began in 1988 when he joined AT&T Bell Laboratories, where he developed the first practical system for recognizing unconstrained handwritten digits. This system was used to read over 10% of the checks in the United States from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. In 2003, he joined New York University as a professor at the Courant Institute and became the founding director of the Center for Data Science in 2012. Since 2013, he has been leading AI research at Meta, overseeing the company's AI development.

His contributions include the advancement of CNNs, for which he shared the 2018 Turing Award with Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton. Additionally, he co-developed the DjVu image compression technology and the Lush programming language for machine learning research.

Awards and Honors

  • LeCun's achievements have been widely recognized, including:
  • The 2018 Turing Award (shared with Bengio and Hinton)
  • The 2022 Princess of Asturias Award (shared with Bengio, Hinton, and Demis Hassabis)
  • The 2025 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering (shared with several AI researchers)
  • The 2014 IEEE Neural Network Pioneer Award
  • The 2015 PAMI Distinguished Researcher

LeCun is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the French Academy of Sciences .
